Apologies...

For not updating recently I've been a bit of a sicknote of late. But I'm
back on it & ready to serve up another tasty dish of live musical mayhem!

Last Thursday's show was a little different from the norm, with beat
poetry, projections & soundscapes filling the air. The People loved it

So there I was,

minding my own business at around midnight on the Golborne Road (and no I was not putting up posters for 'In The Mood', our great Saturday night at Number Ten oh no sir not me) when I spot 3 men of the Caucasian persuasion staggering towards me from the Wornington Road end. 'Old Bill' I immediately think but they were too inebriated, even for them. They stop & banter for a bit, clearly lost.

Finally one of them plucks up the courage to speak to me. "Heshcusse me" he says in a slurred Lancashire accent, "we're trying to find Ledbury Road". I look up & begin to point in a north easterly direction when to my surprise I find former England cricket captain Mike Atherton wobbling before me (sorry for calling you 'Mike Gatting' man, I saw you bristle at the affront but what can I say, I support the Windies) & a minor TV actor who's name escapes me. Turns out they'd been in that Spanish garden of culinary delights Galicia on the Portobello Road and, having turned left instead of right upon staggering out with bellies full of tapas, walked in a 500 metre semi circle only to find themselves two minutes from where they'd started.

I could make a snide remark at this point about how, with a sense of direction like that it's no surprise England won fuck all during his charge, but I won't.

Their blushes were visible even by moonlight as I pointed out their cock up. I could have sent them the wrong way or to a short cut through the local estate but then I'd most likely have blood on my hands. Gentleman that I am, I sent them back to Galicia where they could continue their journey to Ledbury Road via the relative safety of the 'Bello.

Blimey what a day. First David Cameron gets his bike nicked outside the bookies (oops sorry Tesco's) on the 'Bello & then this. Athers is lucky he bumped into me...

They're At It Again.

As most of you know Edenham Old People's Home (in the shadow of Trellick Tower) was closed down over a year ago after a long running battle between Kensington & Chelsea council & local residents. At the time the council promised to consult with the community on what use the old building might be put to & would look into provisioning the site for affordable housing or a new home for the elderly. A letter went out from the council last week stating RBK&C would be using the site as a coach park for the new school academy in Chelsea. Of course no mention of how quickly they intended to act: the bulldozers moved in on Friday last week & by the time of this writing the buildings were rubble.

Sorry but it's just not good enough. Your actions are symptomatic of the high handedness of a council that feels confident it has no need to truly consult North Kensington residents about anything. You're supposed to consult the community before you act, not after the fact. That's the whole point of the word 'consult'. Look it up guys. The only conclusion we can draw is that you're either all so stupid that you don't actually know what the word 'consult' means or you simply don't give a monkey's about local views, safe in the knowledge that most in the area wouldn't vote for you anyway & your majority at the Town Hall is safe. We fear it may be both.

Local Golborne Cllr Emma Dent Coad said:

 

'Golborne residents feel betrayed by the Council who told relatives, local Councillors and the Friends of Edenham they would provide new facilities for older people on the Edenham site.

 

'Nobody wants a coach park in the middle of this community. Diesel fumes and particulates will increase the already poor air quality, and increased traffic will create havoc in Golborne market. What's wrong with the Kensal Gasworks site? There are no close neighbours and the site will be empty for years.

 

'It is heartbreaking to see the home being bulldozed when there is no future plan. I will do anything necessary to make the Council keep to their commitment to provide care for local older people on this site. This protest is just the beginning.'

So what now? Well RBK&C have to seek planning permission in order to go through with the proposal.  Write to the leader of the council Merrick Cockell at cllr.cockell@rbkc.gov.uk & make your feelings known.

Victory For Market Traders

COLVILLE AND GOLBORNE COUNCILLORS RECLAIM £750k MARKET WASTE OVERPAYMENT FROM COUNCIL AND HAVE STALL FEES REDUCED BY UP TO £20 WEEKLY

 

After 5 years of tough talking with Council bosses, alongside the Portobello Management Committee, who represent Portobello and Golborne Road Market traders, Colville and Golborne Ward Councillors have agreed a deal with the Council worth £750,000 for the traders.

 
The arrangement, agreed by the Cabinet on 12^th June, means that:

 - The Council will repay £750,000 to the Street Trading Account to compensate for the market waste overcharge during the past six years;

 - Stall fees and other charges will be reduced by up to £20 weekly, with the largest reductions on Golborne Road;

 -The Council will set up a £22,000 Market Development Reserve;

 - Market waste costs will reduce by up to £135,000 annually;

 - The Council will repay market traders overcharged for waste collection during the past six years.

 

Colville Ward Councillor, Dez O’Neill said, “We have worked very closely with the Portobello Management Committee to resolve this long-running dispute with the Council. This is good news for our ongoing campaign to improve and better promote Portobello and Golborne Road Market”

Golborne Ward Councillor, Pat Mason added, “The Council has done very little to help street traders and shop owners on Golborne Road who are having a difficult time at present. We fought to get larger fee reductions here, and to get the waste money back which I hope will ease the pressure. We’re not going to stop until we persuade the Council to give Golborne Road the same attention they do Kensington High Street”.

Yesterday the final curtain came down on the consumption of alcohol on all public transport in our fair city.  The first edict of new London Obermeister  Boris Johnson, it's ironic that a ban should be the first act of a self confessed libertarian. I thought 'protecting us from ourselves' was the preserve of the nanny-ish Neo-Labour. Alas the affliction is common to both. Zero tolerance starts here...

A grand time was had by all last night in celebration of Ali & Martin's birthdays. We're not sure of Martin's age but we do know there's a 5 involved. As for Ali I wanna buy some of what she's taking 'cos she barely looks 30. A fine set by Abi Hercules of Easy Tiger was followed by Taurus Trakker (that's the mystery of the band's name solved) largeing it on stage. We even had a few lost lambs show up. Must have been a slow day. They were fashionably late though so perhaps not... Hope your party was fun & Happy Birthday to you too.

Coppers For Karma

As you know I rarely venture outside the Grove these days. In fact one rarely leaves Golborne Road... But last Thursday it had to be done: the glorious Coppers For Karma were making their debut at Camden's infamous Dublin Castle. They begged me to reach and after much deliberation I deigned to go. As usual they didn't dissapoint: the boys kicked arse, took names & everybody loved them (especially the women). The after party lasted 15 hours & took in Golders Green, a picnic on Hampstead Heath & a bevy or 3 at Camden Lock's Bay 17 (Dingwalls for old farts like me). I didn't think I had the stamina for such marathon sessions these days but when you're in good company anything is possible.

Yes we're back!  Bigger, better & on a different day... Thursday is the new Wednesday for Golborne Groove: great music & great vibes will stir the soul once again. And still free, until 10pm at least. The reason? We've teamed up with Jerry Bascome of MasterMind & RapAttack, two of the best soundsystems on the planet. You may know them as two of the best sounds at Notting Hill Carnival catering for the mature, grown up raver. They'll be on the upper floors at Number Ten playing sweet music till 2am.
